Interview with
Mr. Jorge Luis Pino
Marketing & Commercial General Manager for the Latin America Region
First of all Jorge, can you tell our readers a little about your own career in shipping, and why did you choose this line of business? What do you like about shipping?
With nearly 20 years in the shipping industry, I’ve had the valuable opportunity to experience its many facets across various companies. It’s an incredibly dynamic and engaging field.
My interest in shipping began during my Bachelor’s degree in International Trade. I found it to be a fascinating area that offered insight into global cargo flows and the profound geopolitical and social impacts on trade.
Ocean Network Express (ONE) is a global shipowner. Can you tell our readers about the coverage between the East Coast of South America and worldwide? How many services have you got? (Destinations, countries, etc.)
ONE offers vast coverage with over 16 services from the East Coast of South America (ECSA). These services cover countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, as well as the Caribbean, Central America, and the U.S. Gulf.
Through our direct and connecting services, we reach key global markets including the Far East, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and Africa. Our network includes both ONE-operated vessels and strategic slot agreements, ensuring flexible and reliable solutions for our customers worldwide.
Does Ocean Network Express also accept OOG and breakbulk cargo onboard?
At ONE, we are committed to Delivering Beyond traditional boundaries by actively promoting and facilitating the handling of Special Cargo, including Out-of-Gauge (OOG) and Breakbulk. This is managed by a dedicated team of specialists focused on identifying opportunities and collaborating closely with all parties in the supply chain. Our goal is to proactively address operational challenges through safety-driven planning and specialized expertise, ensuring that even the most complex project cargo moves seamlessly across our global network.
Reflecting our spirit of innovation, ONE was the first carrier to introduce online quotations for OOG cargo, providing our customers with faster, more transparent, and more efficient digital solutions. This commitment to technology and service excellence is delivering clear results: our commercial efforts in this segment have seen a remarkable 46% increase in volume from 2024 to 2025.
Looking ahead, we aim to sustain this strong growth by designing tailored solutions that fit each specific project. Whether it is oversized machinery or project-critical components, we provide the visibility, risk mitigation, and execution support needed to transform logistical challenges into opportunities. As ONE, we continue to help our customers deliver beyond expectations.
What can you tell us about the history of ONE, and which shipping lines are behind your organization?
Ocean Network Express (ONE) was established on July 7, 2017, and officially began its operations on April 1, 2018, with its global headquarters in Singapore. The company emerged from a strategic decision to consolidate the container shipping market, joining forces to enhance global competitiveness and navigate the fluctuations of the maritime industry. Today, it stands as one of the world’s leading carriers, operating a fleet of over 260 vessels with a total capacity exceeding 2.0 million TEUs.
The three major Japanese shipping lines behind the formation of ONE are Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line). By merging their container shipping divisions into this joint venture, these companies combined decades of Japanese maritime expertise into a single, unified network. This collaboration allows ONE to maintain a robust global presence, serving over 120 countries with more than 9,000 employees worldwide.
Under the slogan “As ONE, We Can,” the company focuses on delivering end-to-end shipping solutions, integrating maritime operations with inland services such as rail, barge, and truck. Beyond transporting a diverse range of cargo—from electronics and food to pharmaceuticals—ONE distinguishes itself through advanced market intelligence and a rigorous commitment to safety and operational integrity. While many of its vessels are chartered, the company maintains high standards through close collaboration with vessel owners and its dedicated Marine Safety and Quality (MSQ) department.
What is the policy of ONE with respect to freight forwarders? Some shipping lines directly compete with the forwarders and have a policy reflecting this. What is the policy at ONE?
ONE views freight forwarders as essential partners in the global supply chain. We actively engage with small, medium, and large forwarders worldwide, recognizing the significant value they add to international trade. Our policy is focused on collaboration, and we remain committed to strengthening these partnerships to deliver integrated solutions for our mutual customers.
When you look into your crystal ball for 2026 what do you see concerning space, rates, and volumes?
While international trade remains dynamic and unpredictable for 2026, our focus at ONE is on market agility and customer needs. We closely monitor global trends to manage space, rates, and volumes effectively, ensuring reliable service despite market fluctuations. By staying attentive to our customers’ evolving requirements, we remain committed to providing stable and innovative shipping solutions across our global network.
